My Ibiza, the island of Carpe Diem

My Ibiza, the island of Carpe Diem

The Latvian top model Inguna Butane chose the most gipsy of the Balearics as a shelter. Here he can raise his children and let the spirit echo take over. He also gives us his places not to be missed: where to eat, go shopping, explore …

There is something in the water, in the earth, in the air. A feeling that can not be explained, but that alerts the senses as soon as you set foot on the island. A sort of magical, almost magnetic revelation that puts the visitor in connection with a very intimate and profound part. Ibiza is one of the jewels of the Mediterranean crown, almost a myth, a legend and, perhaps for this reason, with a double personality, “a deep and dark soul”, as the Spanish singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat would say.

This earthly paradise, where the carpe diem is understood as the only true philosophy of life, has been for decades the playground of the international jet set. But within it (both literally and metaphorically) dwells a mystical aspect, a pagan spirituality that comes from the wildest nature.

This powerful energy discharge was the same one that experimented the model Inguna Butane (Latvian, born in 1986) ten years ago during her first Ibicenca incursion. “Only when I felt the humidity, the perfume, the breeze that enveloped me … I realized that I had fallen in love at first sight.” And such was the thunderbolt that the supermodel decided to settle permanently on the island to live next to her husband, Eric, and his two sons. On an estate near Sant Josep de sa Talaia, «lost in the mountains and hidden in the woods», he opened the doors of his house to tell how he enjoys this simple life and in perfect harmony with the «payesa» culture (peasant of the Balearics) so characteristic of Ibiza.

“Living surrounded by nature is everything to me,” he confesses. “I feel a very strong bond with the earth, it’s like a return to my roots. As a child I lived with my family in the countryside and even now I do not conceive of a different way of raising my children. “It was one of the most charismatic faces that trod the international runways at the beginning of this millennium, an image in advertising campaigns of Dolce & Gabbana and Bottega Veneta, among others, and today carefully chooses his collaborations, especially publishing, always putting the family first. “Today they are my priority, I want to see Velver and Eden grow, to teach them the same values about the nature that my parents instilled in me”.

With the children you can enjoy long walks on the beach collecting branches, stones and shells with which you then build huts. “They love animals. They always want to come home with birds and lizards to take care of them. ” An echoing spirit that completely permeates his lifestyle and which is embodied in a house in which straight lines and whitewashed walls contrast with raw slate and wood. “Respecting the surroundings and the environment of the island was a personal choice. We like simple, discreet things. And also have a garden that does not need a lot of water and that grows almost in wild form. One of my favorite corners is a wooden platform that we built around a huge pine. It gives me good vibrations, so I decided to celebrate my thirtieth birthday there ».

Inguna has a degree in interior design, which made her able to reflect her personality in every corner of the house. «Every piece of furniture, every object that decorates the house is the result of our history. We found many of them from Ibiza Troc, a curious second-hand shop of Santa Gertrudis, and many others during our travels, “he admits. And no matter what corner of the world he is in, every time he comes home he feels satisfied. Full of that peace of mind that transmits swimming in the turquoise waters of Cala Mastella, walking barefoot in the dunes of the Parque Natural de Ses Salines or watching the sunset in front of the islet of Es Vedrà: «It is a very powerful place, the only to contemplate it transmits me so much peace and positivity that I feel stronger.
